At the end of this guide, you will not only be able to draw this letter in a fun way, but you will also be able to create all sorts of cool designs.
So let’s start the fun by starting with the first of 6 steps that we have prepared for you!
How to Draw A Bubble Letter S
Step 1
The letter S is a simple wavy letter. Still, there’s no harm in sketching it out with a pencil before you start. Look closely at the reference image, then write a capital S as usual.
This will keep the shape of the letter consistent as we break it up into smaller parts.
When you are ready we can draw the first line of the design. This is the highest point of the letter as shown in the reference image.
As you can see, it’s a bit like a horse racing shape turned to the left. Now that we’ve drawn it as it looks in our example, we can proceed to adding it in the next step.
Step 2
In this second step of the guide we continue the line you started in the first step. If you can do the first and second step at once, it would make the process go more smoothly.
This second part extends from the top of the shape we drew in step one. It gradually curls around and down to form the back of the S.
Our goal is to make the shape as smooth and wavy as possible. So try to keep your character strokes as loose as possible while maintaining the shape.
Then we move on to step 3 of the guide, where we continue to build on what you’ve drawn so far.
Step 3
In this third step, we’re going to add quite a bit to your letter S bubble, but you absolutely can! In this step we will draw the base section of the letter.
The line continues where the other line left off and then curves back. Next you need to draw a slightly curved line to the right to form the base of the letter.
If you first penciled the letter S, you’ll see how it all fits together when we finish the outline in the next step.
Again, try to keep your drawing strokes smooth and even to ensure the outline flows well.
Then, in the next step, we’ll finalize the outline so you can start adding some interior details. When you’re done, let’s start finishing the pattern!
Step 4
This is where it all comes together, because we’re going to finish the outline of the S now. Now you will see how all these lines work together to create this bubble letter!
This might also be the trickiest part of the drawing, so take it slow. It is advisable to start from the terminus at the foot of the S.
It curls up and then inwards toward the center of the S, as shown in our reference image. Then it is folded outwards until it reaches the end of the line that ends at the top.
Once you’ve created these new lines, your S outline is complete! Now would be a good time to smooth out the edges if something feels out of place.
Also, you should erase any pencil lines you drew in the first step, as we won’t need them from now on.
Be careful not to accidentally erase any of the trailing lines or smudge the ink! In the fifth step we then start drawing some interior details.
Step 5
As good as this letter S looks now, it still doesn’t look like a bubble letter. However, we will change it with a few small details.
One way to do this is to add some reflective dots to the letter. We imagine a light source in the upper left part of the drawing.
To demonstrate this, these shapes are drawn onto the top sections of the S-curls. The reference image shows you what it should look like if you want to recreate it.
If you want the light source to be somewhere else, you can draw these oval shapes somewhere else on the letter.
Just try to position them consistently so it looks more realistic. Next we’ll add some simple line detail inside the S.
These line details, while simple, go a long way in making the S look voluminous. They close together within the outline, giving the impression that the letter is made out of a balloon.
These are also details that you can draw in different places if you want the letter to look more unique. Before you start coloring the picture in the next step, make sure to add as much detail as you like!
These can be on the letter itself or around it. We’ll also look at some fun ways to personalize the letter after Step 6.
Step 6
This is the final step of this guide and it’s all about adding some color to the letter S of the bubble! There are so many ways to color it that you can really let your creativity run wild.
In our reference image, we showed you just one of the many ways you can color your image. You can choose any color you like, but for now, let’s use green as an example.
If you choose a color and only use one shade of it, the letter will look too flat. That’s why we recommend using a gradient.
Green gets darker the farther you get from light reflections and gets lighter as you get closer. This makes it look like a real object reflecting light.
It’s a simple trick, but it helps make the letter look more three-dimensional. Using color is a great way to bring out colors in a gradient like this, so this would be our top pick for coloring.
